In 1231 the island is mentioned for the first time as Oma, and later in 1309 as Omae. Place name researchers believe that the prefix 'Om' comes from 'Omme', which means distant noise or rumble.
Omø is a Danish island that is approximately 4.5 square kilometers in size. The island is approximately 17 kilometers southwest of Skælskør. According to Dorthe Winther, former chairman of the 27 small islands, the number of permanent residents on the island has increased to 159 per 2023. In June, Omø was named Island of the Year 2023.
The ferry to Omø sails from the Stigsnæs ferry terminal in western Zealand, and the island also forms Omø Parish. Omø is surrounded by water with Omø Sund to the north separating it from Agersø. To the west lies the Great Belt, while Småland waters stretch to the east and south of the island.
