Besøg Sejerø | 12,5 km² Øpas Ø, Børnevenlige Strande, Fyr & Færge
Description:
The name Sejerø is known from approx. 1200 as Syra, originally an uncompounded island name, perhaps to a root meaning 'float slowly', later compounded with -ø. The island consists of two rows of single hills along the north and south coasts, separated by a low-lying area of raised seabed, only about 1 meter above sea level. To reach Sejerø you have two options: Either you can take a private boat or use the Sejerø ferry, where the sailing trip lasts about an hour. It is especially important in the high season to pre-book the ferry berth well in advance, especially if you plan to take your car with you on the trip!
Sejerø has an area of 12.5 square kilometers and is surrounded by the beautiful Sejerø Bay. The sailing time with the ferry from Havnsø to Sejerø takes about 65 minutes. Sejerby, the town in the middle of the island, is home to a small but thriving community of 201 souls. The town offers grocery stores, a cozy inn and other places to eat, as well as its own doctor, all of which are to the delight of the island's inhabitants and visitors. Sejerby is proudly located in Kalundborg Municipality and belongs to Region Zealand, where its unique beauty thrives by the sea.
Sejerø is also known for its characteristic burial mounds, some of which have roots dating back to the Bronze Age. These burial mounds bear witness to the historical settlement of the island and the burial rituals that once took place here. Sejerø's only preserved stone jetty adorns the island's outer tip and stands as a distinctive symbol of its history and culture.
