Kastellet | En Historisk Fæstning og Offentlig Park i København
4.6Based on 2637 reviews on Google
Description:
King Christian IV initiated the construction of the Kastellet in the 17th century as part of a series of fortifications designed to protect Copenhagen from foreign invasions. Its distinctive five-pointed star shape was based on Renaissance military architecture and was intended to give the defenders a clear view.
Over the years, Kastellet has played an important role in Danish military history. In the 19th century it served as barracks for the Danish army, and during the Second World War it was occupied by German forces. Today, it is still an active military facility and is used by the Armed Forces Intelligence Service, the Home Guard and the Judiciary Corps.
Despite the military presence at Kastellet, the area is frequently visited by tourists and locals, as it also functions as a public park.
