Orø Kirke | Vejkirke, Kors og Kalkmalerier i Hellig Forening
Description:
Orø Church is a road church and open every day during the day. The term "road church" originates from Sweden and Norway, where many churches near major roads make a special effort to welcome road users, especially in summer.
In 2001, an exciting discovery was made during the whitewashing of the church. Hidden frescoes and the vault's beautiful rib decorations were revealed and subsequently cleaned and restored. On the north wall you could see a picture of a rider, perhaps Saint George, and on the south wall there was a painting of an angel, possibly part of the Annunciation scene.
In addition, a remarkable relic cross called the Orøkorset was also found. The cross, made of 310 grams of 22 carat gold, shows a crucified Christ defeating a dragon on the obverse. A copy of the cross can be visited at the museum Ourø Minder, while the original is preserved at the National Museum.
These discoveries and restorations have given us a unique insight into the history and artistic heritage of the past. They now constitute valuable evidence of the church and the island's history and are a special feature of Orø Church as a road church.
