How big is Als? Als is an island that lies east of Jutland and has an area of 321 km² and a circumference of 165 km. The island has a total population of 49,518 inhabitants, of which 28,137 live in Sønderborg, which is the largest city on the island. Sønderborg is divided by Alssund, with most of the buildings on the Als side. Als is the 7th largest island in Denmark.
How do you get to Als? Yes and Yes. At Als, the mainland connection is secured through two bridges at Sønderborg and the car ferry Bitten, which operates from Nordals. There are also daily bus and train services connecting the island with the surrounding mainland. In addition, daily ferry departures from the islands of Funen and Ærø to Als are offered. From Søby on Ærø you can even enjoy sailing with 100% green ferry operation aboard the E-ferry Ellen.
