Description:
Plan your trip to Anholt – one of Denmark’s most unique islands in the middle of the Kattegat. The island is known for its desolate and beautiful nature, including Denmark’s largest desert, the Desert, with vast dunes and rare plants. Anholt offers beautiful beaches, hiking, the bird sanctuary at Totten and a cozy harbor environment with cafes, fishing and summer atmosphere. Here you can experience the tranquility far from the mainland, snorkel in clear water or cycle through the island’s special landscape. Stay overnight in summer houses, B&Bs or camping and enjoy the island’s authentic atmosphere. The ferry sails from Grenaa all year round, and the trip takes approx. 3 hours. Anholt is perfect for both day trips and longer stays with a focus on nature, outdoor life and immersion.
Anholt is known for its impressive desert, which covers around 80 percent of the island's area, making it Northern Europe's largest desert area. This desert consists of flat raised sea floor and has preserved its topography and appearance as when the ice melted 10,000 years ago.
To visit Anholt, it takes approximately three hours to sail from Grenaa on the mainland to the island. It is possible to take your car to Anholt by using the ferry route from Grenaa. However, you should be aware that there is limited space for cars on the ferry, usually only up to two cars, and these spaces may be occupied by goods. It is therefore recommended to make a reservation well in advance if you wish to bring your car to Anholt.
The island's name, Anholt, can be traced back to approx. 1250 and is believed to come from the verb "ana," which refers to a windward location, and the suffix "-und," meaning "characterized by, provided with."
At Anholt you can experience a number of fantastic experiences. Explore the island's impressive scenery, rich wildlife and sunny shores that stretch for 25 km. You can take part in desert hikes, admire the clear starry sky in dark surroundings, enjoy water sports, relax on the wonderful beaches and visit Anholt Lighthouse. There is plenty to see and do on this unique island in the middle of the Kattegat between Denmark and Sweden.
