Description:
How big is Avernakø? Avernakø is an island located in the South Funen Archipelago. The island has a total area of 5.9 square kilometers and belongs to Faaborg-Midtfyn Municipality. Avernakø is known for its long, stretched shape and the hilly terrain, which means that the island has significant hills and valleys. The island stretches over a length of approximately 8 kilometers and has a population of around 112 residents in 2023. From where do you sail to Avernakø? Avernakø is sailed from Faaborg by a route that sails triangularly between Faaborg, Lyø and Avernakø. The sailing time directly to Faaborg is 30 minutes, but if you sail via Lyø, it takes around 70 minutes. Why is the island called Avernakø? The island's original name, Ar-nache, (where "Ar" refers to eagle and "nache" means neck or place: "Where the eagle lives"), refers to a time when the island was two separate islands, separated by a narrow isthmus of approximately 700 meters between Avernak and Korshavn. It was a dangerous crossing in the old days, especially during violent storms, and many tragically tried to cross it and lost their lives in the attempt. What is Avernakø known for? Avernakø is known for its characteristic may tree and may pole, which adorn Avernak and Munke on the island. Once a year, on Whit Saturday, the island's residents gather around this May tree. The may tree is a rarity, as apart from Avernakø it is only found on Strynø. The island's history also contains an exciting event from 1685, when one of the island's most remarkable ancient finds was made in the form of six gold bowls with sun signs. What to see on Avernakø?
