Description:
How big is Birkholm? Birkholm is a 92 hectare Danish low moraine island with marine foreland, located in the South Funen Archipelago's largest shallow water area between Tåsinge, Strynø and Hjortø. It is the most untouched of the inhabited islands in the Archipelago. Today, overgrown fields and large grazed meadows characterize the landscape.
How many people live in Birkholm? Birkholm has 11 residents (year 2023).
From where do you sail to Birkholm? Take a trip to Ærø's little brother, namely cozy Birkholm. You sail with the island's local mail boat, and the sailing trip takes approximately 20 minutes. Birkholm has a mail boat in the luxury class, which can cover the distance between Marstal and Birkholm of approx. 25 minutes. The boat holds a limited number of passengers, so we recommend that you reserve a seat. There may not be any restaurants on Birkholm, but the island offers a number of other unique experiences and facilities:
Take-home shop: You can stock up on ice cream in the island's small take-home shop, where you can also get fresh water. The shop often offers homemade frosted cakes, knitwear and a small selection of books and sweets.
Marina: Many yachtsmen enjoy visiting the island's marina, where there is room for up to 40 boats. It is an ideal place to anchor and explore the island.
Accommodation options: At the harbor there are shelters and tent pitches, so you can spend the night in the middle of nature. It's a great way to experience the island's beauty and silence.
Hiking: The island is a treasure for hiking holiday enthusiasts. With its flat topography and lack of paved roads, Birkholm offers a unique opportunity to walk in peace and quiet. The highest point on the island, Hylsbanken, is only 2 meters high, but the whole island is characterized by large, open areas.
Bird watching: The island opens into a headland called Sandhovedet, which is a breeding ground for a number of different bird species. Visitors should refrain from disturbing the area during the period from 1 March to 15 July. Bring binoculars and you can spot a wide variety of birds. Especially in summer, you can experience up to 4,000 mute swans moulting their flight feathers - a very special experience. The island is also home to a healthy population of hares, and an annual hare hunt is organized for those interested.
At Birkholm you can immerse yourself in nature, relax and experience unique moments away from the noise of the hustle and bustle. Discover the island's treasures, whether it's on a walking tour, in a DIY shop or at the marina.
