Why is the island called Bjørnø? Perhaps you are wondering why the island is called Bjørnø, when in fact there are no bears on the island. The explanation for the island's name is possibly to be found in Kay Nielsen's boys' book "Rolf på Bjørnø" from 1957, where a story about the island may contain clues about how the name came about. What can you do on Bjørnø? You can walk the entire island along the coast in a few hours, but for a thorough exploration you should set aside a whole day. The island is easy to explore on foot via paths, but cycling is not ideal.
Bjørnø is popular with kayakers and leisure sailors, and you can arrive at the island in your own boat, kayak or canoe. The island is a good stop on an island hop in the South Funen Archipelago with the possibility of visiting other islands such as Lyø, Avernakø, Skarø, Drejø, Ærø or Hjortø.
The nature on Bjørnø is varied and exciting. You will find hilly hills, beautiful beach areas and a salt meadow to the northwest with rich animal and plant life. Be aware of the birdlife, especially during the breeding season from 1 March to 15 July.
Accommodation options include a primitive tent pitch, Bed & Breakfast and a kiosk in the summer. Bjørnø is known for its fine bathing spots, so remember the swimwear, especially in summer.
Bjørnø offers a treasure trove of natural beauty and is an attractive destination for nature lovers and those who want to explore the South Funen Archipelago and the local island life.
