Hjarnø is a small island located in the mouth of Horsens Fjord with a population of 117 inhabitants. The island has a total area of only 3.2 square kilometers and is mostly flat, with its highest point only 7 meters above sea level. The name "Hjarnø" is believed to derive from the Old Norse word "Hjarni," which means elevation. What is Hjarnø known for? When you want to visit Hjarnø, you can take the Hjarnø ferry, which departs from the small ferry town of Snaptun. Snaptun is located on the south side of Horsens Fjord and serves as the starting point for the ferry that takes you to Hjarnø, which is just 500 meters away out in the water. The crossing takes just five minutes, and the ferry sails many times a day. You don't need to make any advance reservations – you can simply turn up at the port and take the ferry when it suits you. Can you walk around Hjarnø? Beautiful Hjarnø is large enough to offer a varied selection of hiking experiences, but small enough that you can easily walk around the island. On Hjarnø there are marked walking routes which lead around the island in such a way that you experience the coast, nature and the island's attractions. Hjarnø has 7.4 kilometers of marked walking routes that follow the island's southern coast and main road. Start the tour at Hjarnø's ferry port and visit Denmark's second smallest church. Follow the coast past Hjarnø Odde and Hougård Strand, and walk along the main road, where you pass the campsite with a kiosk and Det Grafiske Magasin's coffee shop. The round trip is 5.5 kilometers, but you can shorten it by taking Østre or Vestre Kirkevej towards the harbour. In total, there are 7 kilometers of signposted routes on the island.
