Description:
How big is Hjortø? Hjortø is a low, dammed moraine island in the South Funen Archipelago between Drejø and Tåsinge, located 13 km southwest of Svendborg. The island covers an area of 0.90 km² and consists of a total of 13 dwellings, spread over five farms and eight houses. Hjortø has 7 residents in the year 2023. From where do you sail to Hjortø? There is a daily connection to Svendborg by mail boat, a trip that takes 60 minutes. Why is the island called Hjortø? Although the island is called Hjortø, there are no deer here, and according to Poul Henrik Harritz's book 'Danmarks småøer' there probably never have been. Harritz believes that the island's name probably derives from the male name Hjort. What can you see on Hjortø? Hjortø is one of Denmark's smallest inhabited islands with a daily ferry connection to Svendborg. There are no shops or eateries on the island, so it is important to bring essentials for your visit. At the harbor in summer, you will find facilities such as toilets, showers and running water, as well as the possibility to charge your mobile phone. There is also a primitive tent site with three shelters, which can be booked for overnight stays. In May 2022, a third shelter was set up with support from the Albani Foundation. At the port you can also stamp your Øpas.
Hjortø offers attractions in nature, including a rich birdlife, amphibians, rare plants and sea eagles. You are always close to the water, as the island is rarely more than a few hundred meters from the water's edge. The western tip of the island is a bird sanctuary and is closed to access from 1 March to 15 July. Outside of this period, you can enjoy the fantastic view and watch the Ærø ferries and leisure sailors pass in the Højestene fairway.
For a unique experience, you can wade over to the neighboring island of Hjelmshoved and explore the beach, listen for bell frogs in June or pick the beautiful, rare flowers on the island. The harbor also houses a small museum in the old fish house, where you can learn more about the island's history and the families that have lived here for generations.
Don't forget to take one of the island tours to explore the beautiful landscape and nature. Tour 1 is a round trip through the city and along the south side of the island, duration approx. 1 hour. Tour 2 is a nature experience on the western tip of the island, duration approx. 1 hour. Trip 3 is a very special experience where you wade to the neighboring island of Hjelmshoved. And finally, visit the museum on the harbor where you can enjoy an ice cream as a reward for your experiences.
