The plane grave at Skarø: Skarø Cemetery bears a memory. Here rest two English soldiers, part of the crew of an English plane that was bombed by the Germans on 15 February 1944 between Tåsinge and Skarø. Dogfights raged over the island, and the crashed plane left only scattered wreckage. The tailpipe ended up on Skarø and hit Axel Eriksen's backyard. Two airmen were pulled up on the beach and buried at Skarø cemetery by the German armed forces. The Skarø residents remembered them fondly. Later, The Commonwealth War Commission erected the official RAF Iron Cross at the grave site. After the war, the islanders collected money for a dignified headstone, and the spring of 1946 marked the dedication of the new headstone with guests of honor from 10 British soldiers.
