How big is Årø? Årø is a Danish island with 147 inhabitants (year 2023) and an area of 5.66 km². Årø is located in Little Belt at the mouth of Haderslev Fjord, approx. 1.5 km from the mainland. The sailing time to Årø is approx. 7 to 8 minutes, and sailing approx. every hour.
Where does the ferry to Årø sail? The ferry to Årø sails from Årøsundhavn. The ferry has the capacity to take 12 cars and 98 passengers. The Aarø ferry operates daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. There is, however, an emergency call outside this time for emergency situations such as illness. It is not possible to reserve a place in advance. Boarding on the ferry is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that there may be changes in departure times in connection with extra trips in the high season.
Why is the island called Årø? The name Årø comes from the two waters that surround the island: Lillebælt and Aaen, which separate the island from Korsø with the harbour. This forms the origin of the island's name: Aarø comes from Aa ø, which means "the island with the river."

Can you walk around Årø? Yes, you can explore the island using the marked tours and walks that Haderslev Municipality has made. Here are some suggestions for beautiful tours around the island:
Tour suggestion 1 (1-1.5 km): A short trip north to Løkke, where you can visit "æ bøes" and return.
Tour proposal 2 (4.5 km): A route through the city, past the "Christmas Church," out to the island's oldest dykes and back. Also visit the pumping station.
Tour suggestion 3 (4.5 km): Through Aarø town's unique environment, south to Bolmose Ende, and back past the disused school and "Aarøhus."
Tour suggestion 4 (6.5 km): From the harbor's steep area to the lighthouse, along the beach to Aarø Kalv and back to the city.
On Årø you can also experience the Camino route at Haderslev Næs, which is part of the pilgrimage route.
